Justin died this year. For seven whole minutes his heart stopped and all his family heard was ‘code blue’ coming over the hospital speaker. On January 12 of this year, Justin suffered a stroke at only 33 years old and they didn’t expect him to survive.

His family didn’t know at the time that the generosity of our community would play such a role in his healing. They didn’t know that they'd come to rely on the kindness of Cape Breton for comfort in a time of despair.

They spent 20 days in the Intensive Care Unit with Justin lying unconscious and often lifeless. When his doctors assessed him, the prognosis was grim. The expectation was that if he survived, his sight may never return, he’d be paralyzed for life or that he may never be able to communicate with his family again. The worst day of his family's life was when they were told that they may have to consider taking him off of life support.

McHappy Day this May 8th is fun for the whole family, but more importantly it’s helping strengthen healthcare for families in Cape Breton.

Each year, hundreds of patients are treated at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Patients are treated for everything from serious illnesses, like cancer, to serious injuries and more.
