The Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award - 2015

Thursday, April 16, 2015. Sydney, N.S. – At the 2015 Volunteer Spring Tea at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation announced the recipient of the Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award.

The Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award was created by the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation to recognize and honor the dedication and caring spirit of the late Mabel MacDougall.

Mabel was a founding member of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Auxiliary and was always selling tickets, holding yard sales and bake sales, and winning the support of donors with her charming personality. Mabel was an active Auxiliary member until she passed in June 2011.

“A call for nomination went out to the community in March and a committee consisting of Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation representatives, and members of Mabel’s family reviewed applications,” commented Brad Jacobs, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation CEO. “There was one outstanding application and the committee felt very strongly about this particular applicant, as she had been nominated by several people and was nominated in previous years.”

The 2015 Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Pat Lee.

Pat has been a volunteer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for more than 12 years. Pat is a dedicated volunteer on the An Cala Palliative Care Unit. She ensures that patients and their families are comfortable and cared for during a very trying time. Pat, along with her partner, provide joy to patients through music. They also bring books to help comfort patients and their families. Pat volunteers weekly on the unit and through her giving spirit, she is able to offer companionship.

The An Cala Palliative staff says of Pat’s work, that no job is “too big or too small.” She helps in the kitchen, cleaning out the fridges, and keeping everything in order.

“Pat has shown dedication and commitment to healthcare in our community,” commented Jacobs. “The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation and the Palliative Care Unit cannot thank Pat enough for everything she does for patients, visitors, and staff at the Regional Hospital.”
