Give on the Green Because You Care Scramble

More than 140 golfers will be hitting the greens because they care on August 19th at Seaview Golf and Country Club for the first annual Give on the Green Because You Care Scramble.

Eleven year old Sam Gracie, last year’s Because You Care Cup winner and son of cancer survivor Tanya Gracie, has organized a golf tournament to raise funds for his Because You Care Cup team, Hattie Heroes.

“I love raising money, because I know people, just like my mom will need cancer care here in Cape Breton,” says Gracie who raised more than $3,600 for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation last year. “We do this because it’s fun, but really we do it because it helps so many people.”

With all funds raised at this year’s Because You Care Cup funding important cancer research in Cape Breton, many of the tournament’s supporters helping because they personally have seen the need. “A tournament like this is exactly what I need to feel good about my community’s care for cancer,” says Ellen MacKenzie, owner of title sponsor Foodland in Sydney Mines, who recently went through a double mastectomy and eight rounds of chemotherapy. “I get emotional thinking that an eleven year old is doing this to help cancer patients all over the world.”

Schwartz Furniture and Foodland are both title sponsors and both owners have personal connections to cancer care in Cape Breton. Because of this generosity, all funds raised will be supporting cancer research in Cape Breton through the 2018 Because You Care Cup Road Hockey tournament to take place September 15th and 16th in Membertou.

This year’s Because You Care Cup, presented by Aucoin’s Renovations and Advanced Insulations, will be held in Membertou for the second year in a row and more than 500 players are expected to fill the streets. The cancer research, which will be partially funded by the tournament, will support clinical trials that will help determine new ways to treat and manage cancer.  “I went through my own cancer battle four years ago,” says Tanya Gracie, Sam’s mother and Because You Care Cup committee member. “Clinical trials and research are the ways to make cancer treatments better for everyone to come. The money we raise may help make treatment or side effects more bearable in the scariest time of someone’s life.”
