The 5th Annual Cape Breton Cares Radiothon will take place on September 27th, 2012.

This 12-hour long event is the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation’s biggest and most exciting event.  And it is all thanks to your support!

Last year, our community came together to raise more than $506,000 at the Cape Breton Cares Radiothon. Thanks to your support, we were able to purchase critical equipment and fund upgrades for departments throughout the Regional Hospital

Equipment purchased through last year’s Radiothon includes:

Cardiac Monitors                                                                                                                                                                                                  Cost: $25,000 each – The Harriss Emergency Department needs four new cardiac monitors, which allow our doctors and nurses to diagnose and treat nearly 5,000 patients each year. Our current monitors are 10 years old, and we are at risk of losing them.

 Defibrillator Monitor
Cost: $12,000 –
This monitor will help the Pediatrics Unit care for critically ill children who, otherwise, might be transferred to the IWK in Halifax for care.

Vital Signs Monitors
Cost: $6,000 each  –
The Pediatrics Unit also needs three of these monitors to improve their ability to more accurately assess their special patients.

 Pain Pump
Cost: $5,000 –
The Palliative Care Unit has to replace a Pain Pump to help staff control the amount of pain medication that is administered to palliative care patients.

SBRT Patient Mobilization Units
Cost: $5,000 each –
These units allow the Cape Breton Cancer Centre to perform radiation therapy on patients who were previously referred toHalifax for radiation associated with prostate cancer, as well as certain head and neck cases.

 CIVCO Carbon Filter Belly Board
Cost: $5,300 –
The Cancer Centre uses this device to reduce the amount of radiation provided to patients receiving treatment in the pelvic region.

Reverse Osmosis Units
Cost: $9,000 each –
The Renal Dialysis Unit needs two of these units, which allow doctors and nurses to provide dialysis to patients who are in other areas of the hospital, like the Intensive Care Unit, and are too sick to visit the Renal Dialysis Unit.
