The Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award
April 16th, 2012. Sydney, N.S. – Recently, at a Spring Tea to celebrate volunteers of the Cape Breton District Health Authority, hosted by the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, The Foundation announced the creation of the Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award.
The Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award will recognize a volunteer of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation who demonstrates outstanding commitment to the Hospital community.
“Mabel MacDougall was a founding member of the Regional Hospital Auxiliary and remained active, selling tickets, holding bake sales, and charming twoonies and loonies out of everyone she met until she passed away last year,” says Barbara Stead-Coyle, Regional Hospital Foundation CEO. “Mabel was a dedicated volunteer whose hard work and commitment had a significant impact on patients of the Regional Hospital over the years.”
The recipient of this award will be a volunteer with five or more years service, who demonstrates outstanding commitment, compassion and care while volunteering within the Regional Hospital or with the Regional Hospital Foundation.
“Our mother, who passed in June 2011, was so dedicated when it came to her volunteer work. It was her life,” says Cindy Anthony and Lloyd MacDougall, children of Mabel MacDougall. “Everyone in the family is so very proud of her and her work for the Hospital. She would be so honored to have this award named after her.”
A call for nominations will be issued to all Hospital staff in January 2013 and the first Mabel MacDougall Volunteer of the Year Award will be given out at the 2013 Volunteer Spring Tea.
Since 1991, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, thanks to the generous support of the community, has raised more than $18 million to purchase medical equipment that has dramatically reduced wait times and provided an increased menu of services – closer to home.

Support two of Cape Breton’s largest charities through one event and help us take steps forward in children’s health! Last year, this tournament sold out, hosting 144 players from Cape Breton’s business community. All proceeds raised support the Pediatrics Unit at the Regional Hospital and the YMCA’s children’s programs.
