September 20, 2011: New, Comfortable Spaces for Patients, Families and Staff at the Regional Hospital

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Sydney, N.S. – The Cape Breton District Health Authority and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation are joining forces to upgrade and create several new common area spaces throughout the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

“Ensuring that patients, families and staff have access to comfortable waiting areas, and private spaces is central to providing quality healthcare to Cape Bretoners,” comments Foundation CEO, Barbara Stead-Coyle.

“The Foundation, through the generosity of two donors recently upgraded the Meloney Comfort Room and has created the Catherine Anne Godwin Patient Support Room in the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Both of these spaces provide warm environments to patients and families who rely on the Cancer Centre for care,” Stead-Coyle added.

A newly created Doctors’ Lounge is a welcome addition for physicians to meet and discuss patient care, share medical information and advances and review patient files in a private setting. This is a standard room in other Hospitals and this space replaces the previous doctors’ lounge that was taken over by another department.

Planning has started for the upgrade of six family rooms throughout the Regional Hospital. Due to the earlier outbreak of c. difficile these rooms will include new furnishings that can be cleaned to limit the spread of infections. The rooms are located in 4A, 4B, 4C, Labour and Delivery, ICU and an ICU private room.

Finally, with funds raised during the 4th Annual Cape Breton Cares Radiothon there are plans to upgrade the playroom and create a family room in pediatrics.

The Hospital Foundation has also supported patient centered upgrades through the Fancies Comfort and Care Grant project. Upgrades to family and waiting areas in the Chest Clinic, Addiction Services, 1C, the Pain Clinic, 3A and Day surgery have all received grants. As well, a breastfeeding room and a waiting area for CAT scan patients have been created.

The furniture and supplies for all of these spaces are being sourced through local businesses and suppliers.

Since 1991, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the community, has raised more than $15 million to purchase medical equipment that has dramatically reduced wait times and provided an increased menu of medical services here at home in Cape Breton.
