August 8, 2011: The Regional Hospital Foundation officially names the Irving Schwartz Radiation Wing
Sydney, NS – On August 8th, 2011, family members and Foundation representatives gathered at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre to celebrate the official naming of the Irving Schwartz Radiation Wing. This is in celebration and recognition of Schwartz’s commitment and leadership to the Regional Hospital Foundation’s $5.5 million Cape Breton Cares campaign, which he chaired.
Schwartz, who was a patient at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, was instrumental in the success of the Foundation’s campaign in support of cancer and neonatal care in Cape Breton. He worked tirelessly to ensure the $5.5 million goal was met in May 2010. “I’ve been a close friend of Irving’s for a long time and, as Campaign Co-Chair, I worked losely with him on the Cape Breton Cares campaign. His dedication to this campaign was truly inspiring and will not be forgotten. Thanks to his perseverance the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will provide the best care to its patients,” shares George Unsworth, Foundation Board Member and Cape Breton Cares campaign Co-Chair.
During this reception, the Cape Breton District Health Authority also named the Irving Schwartz Caring for Cape Breton Award, which recognizes significant achievement in health philanthropy, outstanding community commitment and the ongoing generosity that supports the growth and delivery of health care in the Cape Breton District Health Authority.
“Irving’s ability to inspire and influence people to support home grown projects is a special part of his legacy,” says John Malcom, CEO for the Cape Breton District Health Authority. “Many people in our communities are benefiting from his tireless efforts to raise money for health care. Naming the District’s award in honor of Irving Schwartz is fitting because he truly worked in the spirit of caring for Cape Breton.”
Since 1991, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the community, has raised more than $15 million to purchase medical equipment that has dramatically reduced wait times and provided an increased menu of services – closer to home.
